PRP Optoelectronics

PRP Optoelectronics is a profitable, privately owned company with complete in-house design, development and manufacturing capabilities. Many of the company's products are used in the avionic and military markets, and are to be found in the flight decks of aircraft made by all major manufacturers, as well as in the instrumentation of many ground based and airborne equipment programmes.

Special monolithic arrays are manufactured and used in a range of applications in optical systems ranging from thermal imaging to printing. PRP Optoelectronics manufacture a range of medical light source products for use in Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) and skin disease treatment.

History

PRP Optoelectronics Limited was formed from a management buy-out of the Plessey Three-Five Group's LED display business, just prior to the take-over of Plessey by GEC-Marconi and Siemens in September 1989. The company was assisted in the initial buyout by funding from the venture capital company, 3i, who became a 25% shareholder, with the balance of funding being provided by the directors and employees of the new company. The company has remained profitable over the years and became completely independent in November 2005, with a buy-back of the 25% stake from 3i.

PRP Optoelectronics strategy was to supply and support the range of Plessey LED products, while developing more advanced LED products to reach new markets. Sales expanded into the civil and military aviation market, with products incorporating integrated drive and interface electronics. The retention and development of a monolithic LED array technology gave the company opportunities in the specialized fields of thermal imaging, eyepiece and head-up displays and also in the industrial printer market. Today the company has a substantial order book for its advanced products and continues to support the spares market for the original Plessey products.

The facility is custom built for specialised manufacturing processes and contains a range of technology from front end chip processing through chip and wire bonding to device test.
