AVIONIC, MILITARY & SECURITY DISPLAYS

PRP’s custom display products have been incorporated on a large number of major airborne platforms. The same attributes that have made PRP’s LED displays so successful in avionics applications make them well suited to many high reliability applications such as instrument panel displays in military ground-based and naval applications.

Some examples of the platforms we manufacture displays for are listed below.

Eurofighter typhoon

Eurofighter Typhoon

PRP Optoelectronics developed a dedicated warnings panel display system for the Eurofighter Typhoon. The panel features a 28-caption display with 24 fully programmable bi-colour captions with over- and underlines, and three fixed legend captions, all fitted into an extremely tight space envelope. The display system designed by PRP incorporates many novel features in both the hybrid construction and drive electronics. The LED display modules utilise both analogue and digital ASIC technology and advanced multi-level MCM-C construction.

Westland helicopter

AgustaWestland Lynx Helicopter

PRP Optoelectronics supplies a display that is used to display pitch and roll in the hover trim controller in the Lynx aircraft. This display features dual redundant interfaces and power supplies for enhanced reliability and integrity.

f-16

General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon

PRP Optoelectronics developed the F-16 integrated up-front control panel (IUFCP). The requirement for an 8,685 pixel (193 x 45) LED matrix display meeting full military airborne inhabited fighter specifications. PRP’s solution is based on a co-fired ceramic package, with LEDs on the front face and integrated drive electronics on the rear. Both sides of the ceramic package use PRP’s hybrid chip and wire technology to produce a highly integrated, high performance display. The ceramic display substrate is environmentally protected, and is sealed with an integrated heat sink/mounting assembly and front cover glass.

Westland-149 helicopter

AgustaWestland AW149 Helicopter

The AW 149 is a medium lift helicopter being developed by AgustaWestland, which made its first flight in 2009. PRP Optoelectronics has developed a radio panel control display that will be used on this new helicopter.

f-22

Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor

PRP Optoelectronics designed and manufactured the LED displays for the head-up display (HUD) control panel.

NH90 Helicopter

NHIndustries NH90 Helicopter

PRP Optoelectronics has supplied an illuminated switch panel PCB assembly and a dimming controller PCB assembly that are used on the NH90 platform.

Lockheed Martin C130

Lockheed Martin Super Hercules C-130J

The Super Hercules C-130J is the newest version of the classic Hercules, which has the longest continuous production run of any plane. The C-130J is the only Hercules model still in production. PRP Optoelectronics supplies four custom displays for this aircraft: two green counter/circular displays with long and short pointers respectively, and a 3-digit and a 4-digit green 7-segment display. These displays are used for the fuel gauge, altimeter, and engine management.

Airbus A320

Airbus A320

PRP Optoelectronics has supplied two different models of hermetic displays that are used under covers on the exterior of the Airbus 320 for fuel level monitoring.

BAE Systems Tornado

BAE Systems Tornado

PRP Optoelectronics developed a display system for the Successor IFF, initially for the Tornado aircraft. The system proved so successful that it is now used across all UK platforms requiring SIFF capability. The high reliability display uses a combination of directly viewed alpha-numeric characters and hidden until lit back-lit legends. It features eight large alpha-numeric characters, 10 multi-coloured backlit legends, and integrated LED driver circuits.

Boeing 737

Boeing 737 and 757

PRP Optoelectronics supplied a wide variety of alpha-numeric, bar-graph, rolling-digit and analogue pointer displays that are used for engine and fuel management on variants of the 737-300, 737-400 and 757-500 aircraft.

BAE Systems Hawk

BAE Systems Hawk

PRP Optoelectronics was approached by the OEM to design a replacement for unreliable LCD displays in the engine management panel. PRP developed a new display incorporating both direct view 7-segment displays and backlit legends. The display is sunlight readable and NVG compatible, and forms part of an engine monitoring system that meets full military avionics environmental requirements.

McDonnell Douglas MD80/90

McDonnell Douglas MD80/90

PRP Optoelectronics supplied a green rolling-digit display and a green 9-character 2 line message display for the engine management panel on both the MD80 and the MD90, as well as the amber overhead annunciator panel (OAP).

KAI T-50 Golden Eagle

KAI T-50 Golden Eagle

PRP Optoelectronics designed and manufactured the integrated up-front control panel LED display for the Korean trainer aircraft T-50 and its variants.

Aircraft simulator display

Aircraft simulator displays

In addition to designing and manufacturing a number of aircraft displays, PRP also provides total instrument level packages for simulators – these include the displays, interface electronics and supporting software. Systems have been supplied for simulators that include F-22 (shown here), F-16, Eurofighter Typhoon and Hawk aircraft.
